Summary: This session is not just for finance professionals – all club professionals will benefit from a better understanding of the slippery slope of financial fraud in a club environment and how to identify potential risks in the control environment to provide appropriate safeguards. Although fraud is rare, vigilance is required at all clubs to keep it that way. This session will include practical suggestions to improve the control environment, which can be very simple to implement and don't need to be complex or cumbersome to be effective. Learning Objectives ("As a result of participating in this program, participants will be able to"): · Understand how to approach suspected fraud at their Clubs · Identify control environment risks to both cash and non-cash accounts · Improve the control environment to safeguard against fraud Biography: Liz McDowell is a Director with GGA Partners. An accredited CPA, CA, and CCM, with over 18 years of professional experience, including as a professional public accountant, private golf club COO, and trusted advisor to the private club industry. Liz has hands-on experience uncovering, investigating, and repairing environments where private club fraud has occurred. Active across the club industry, Liz has served on a number of association and private club advisory boards and their committees. She has delivered educational sessions and programs and been a featured speaker and panelist within the industry, and serves as the subject matter expert for PGA Canada's "Finance Essentials for Golf Industry Leaders" course. She has also supported student CPA's with academic mentorship through the CPA, CA designation process, and spent three seasons as an evaluator of the National CPA, CA proficiency examination, now known as the CFE.
